Learn to Swim

Part of the Modernian Swimming Club, the Teaching Scheme is recognised throughout the County for the quality results achieved through the learn-to-swim programme.  The Teaching Scheme offers Learn to Swim lessons in half hourly sessions early every weekday evening and on Saturday mornings.

Teaching follows the revised A.S.A. Teaching Plan from Beginner to Advanced competency. When they have reached the appropriate level swimmers are offered the opportunity of progressing to a “Bridging” group formed to ease the progress from the teaching classes through longer (one-hour) sessions in preparation for the later more demanding training needed for the training requirements of the competitive swimming squads.

Although the Modernian S.C. is principally a competitive swimming club with many of the Bridging Squad moving into competition swimming, other swimmers progress to synchro., water polo and diving. The training is broad in order to accommodate the basics of all aquatics and to engender an enjoyment of swimming.

The Pool, Class Division, Teachers

All lessons take place at Bedford Modem School pool, an indoor pool situated at the school playing fields at the end of Clarendon Street, Bedford. The pool is 100’ (30.4m.) x 35’ (l0.7m.). Depth is 0.9m sloping to 2.2m.Water temperature is a near constant 82 F.

For most teaching purposes it is divided into four sections with four classes swimming across the pool. Class sizes vary slightly with an aim of 6 children for beginners with numbers increasing to 10/12 as proficiency improves. There are four qualified A.S.A. teachers, one to each class, and a teaching supervisor overseeing sessions..

Courses of lessons are organised according to the school term. These vary in length minimally 10 sessions to a maximum of 13, with an average of 12 sessions per term. Fees are the same for all terms and are payable termly in advance. For further enquiries contact the Teaching Scheme organiser or click here for an enrolment form.
